According to the Hollywood Reporter; Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller will pen the script and executive produce a new series set in the Batman universe, this time based around the backstory of everyone’s favourite butler, Alfred Pennyworth.
The show will be a separate entity from Gotham, and will therefore not be featured in it’s already established universe; Sean Pertwee is not expected to reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth from Gotham.
American Network Epix, has joined the long list of networks involved in DC comics projects. Epix has ordered a 10 episode straight to series order. “As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,” Epix president Michael Wright stated. “We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
The show will act as a prequel to Alfred’s life as Bruce Wayne’s guardian, and will explore his time in the British SAS and his early days working with Thomas Wayne in 1960s London. Alfred Pennyworth, like Batman, was a character created created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
The show does not have a release date, but speculation points to a 2019 release. Meanwhile catch Gotham’s finale this Thursday.
