Another Early Doctor Who Adventure is On the Way!

After leaking on Amazon earlier today, it is now officially confirmed that “The Savages” will be the next missing Doctor Who serial to get a (2D) animated release.

This four-part serial was the ninth from Season 3 and was broadcast from 28 May to 18 June 1966. It starred William Hartnell as the First Doctor alongside companions Steven Taylor (Peter Purves) and Dodo Chaplet (Jackie Lane).

A description for the release has been provided, which reads:

In The Savages, the Doctor and his travelling companions, Steven and Dodo, arrive on an unnamed planet where they encounter two distinct people – the Elders and the Savages. They soon discover the Elders are the evil, draining the primitive Savages for their life source to remain young and powerful forever. This story marks the final regular appearance of Purves as Steven.

A teaser trailer for the release can be seen below:

After some speculation as to whether we’d get another animation announced soon, and what the story would be; it is nice to see one of the First Doctor’s lesser-known serials get the animation treatment (though some speculated “The Smugglers” would be next), especially as it has more for Steven and Dodo to do, the latter especially who was otherwise fairly poorly served during her run.

Interestingly, and in contrast to other four-part animations, this set will include three discs, with the colour and Black and White versions of the new animation featuring alongside exclusive VAM, and, presumably, a telesnap reconstruction (a rarity for this season), though, a detailed list of VAM content has yet to be confirmed.
