Our first bit of casting news for the much-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel has come in a big way. Naomi Watts, known for her many roles in TV and film, has been cast in a lead role.

HBO has described Watts’ character as, “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret”. Her character has yet to be named, leading many to believe that the role will reference a major family in the Game of Thrones universe.

The prequel is currently untitled but is being written by creator George R. R. Marti and Jane Goldman. HBO has described the sequel as, “Taking place thousands of years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ the series chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”

Game of Thrones is adapted from the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series, by writer George R. R. Martin.

Game of Thrones will conclude with its 8th and final season next year, with the prequel following some time after.
