Adult Swim and Crunchyroll, alongside Alcon Television Group, a division of Alcon Entertainment are producing/distributing a new entry into the Blade Runner universe.

It will be an anime bearing the title “Blade Runner – Black Lotus” taking inspiration from the seminal 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049 and will have 13 episodes produced by animation studio Sola Digital Arts, who worked on Ultraman.

Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) will direct all episodes of the premiere season. Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy) is a creative producer.

Not much is known about the plot, but producers have confirmed the story will take place in the year 2032 and will include characters that have already featured in the film series.

This isn’t the first time that Blade Runner has been adapted into an anime as a short film titled “Black Out 2022” was produced to promote Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. It was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe.

Adult Swim will air the English dubbed episodes on its Toonami programming block. Meanwhile, Crunchyroll will handle worldwide streaming.

Keep an eye out for more updates in the future!
