MCU or no MCU?
Sony has released a trailer for their Spider-Man spin-off, Morbius, starring Jared Leto. Check out the almost three-minute-long teaser trailer here:
“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”
Jared Leto will star and Daniel Espinosa will direct the newest Spin-off of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, following in the footsteps of Tom Hardy’s Venom, with hints to the MCU’s version of Spider-Man.
The trailer brings questions as to whether Morbius takes place in Disney’s MCU or Sony’s Spider-Man series, kicked off by Venom. This is due to Michael Keaton’s appearance at the end of the trailer, supposedly portraying the role of Vulture/Adrian Toomes, the main villain from the MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The trailer also confirmed the existence of a version of Spider-Man, due to graffiti shown on the walls in one scene, however, there is no confirmation that this is the Tom Holland version.
Jared Leto is well known for both his roles in the film industry, as well as being the frontman for his band, 30 Seconds to Mars. Leto’s previous foray into the comic book world was in the role of the Joker, which has been controversial and divisive among fans since the release of 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Daniel Espinosa, may be recognised for his work as director of the Sci-fi thriller Life, which starred the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds.
Morbius will follow the story of Marvel comics antihero, Morbius the Living Vampire. The character of Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, making his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man Issue 101 in 1971. This was the first Spider-Man issue not to be written by comic legend and Marvel co-creator, Stan Lee.
Jared Leto stars alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson. Morbius is expected to release this summer.
