According to Variety, it looks as if Warner Bros. is looking to continue Jared Leto’s Joker role in a new standalone movie. The character, portrayed by Leto, made his DCEU debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad.

Sources stated that, “Jared Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad.” This includes the already announced and rumoured Harley Quinn, Gotham City Sirens, Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2.

Another Joker origin movie was previously announced last year by Warner Bros. and would be completely unrelated to any other DC movie property out there at the moment, set in its own universe. This Joker movie is set to be exec produced by Martin Scorsese and is rumoured to star Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker.

Leto’s role in 2016 came under controversy due to both his appearance, which some fans disliked, and his cameo like role in the movie; despite being a huge part of the advertising campaign. Leto previously stated that he hoped to expand the role further in the future, and it seems that Warner Bros. will be providing him with that chance.

Leto recently starred in the amazing Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049, as well as recently releasing a new album with his band 30 Seconds to Mars.

No plot details or a release date for either of the Joker movies is available right now, but make sure to stay tuned for San Diego Comic Con from the 19th – 21st of July for more news on this and other movies on the WB/DC Comics slate.
