A black James Bond. Yes or no?
Everyone has seen the stories of Idris Elba being suggested as the next James Bond this past week and the man himself added more fuel to the fire as he tweeted a selfie with the caption “The name’s Elba. Idris Elba.” Paraphrasing the famous James Bond quote.
Elba as the next James Bond has been a topic on social media for maybe the past few years now. It would be a game changer and would definitely make money bringing in a whole different demographic of viewers. Some people are for Elba as James Bond and others are against it. I understand both sides of the debate, the “traditionalists” state that the character has always been a white male and even been described in the novel as having “blue-grey eyes”.
On the other side of the debate, James Bond is a fictional character and his race has never been explicitly stated and previous actors who have portrayed the character haven’t fulfilled the character descriptions in the novel either.
In my personal opinion I believe Idris Elba will be a great casting choice, because for one he’s an amazing actor and has shown versatility throughout his career and two it would be a revolutionary casting, his casting would act as an example of the film industry finally moving forward and finally allowing people of colour to become a part of the conversation. So if the casting directors do decide to give a man of colour the famous James Bond role they already know there’s only one man for the job: Elba. Idris Elba.
