“See you soon…”
We have been provided with a short teaser and first look at one of DC’s upcoming releases, ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’.
The movie acts as a spin-off of the ‘Suicide Squad’ movie, which also featured Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Since the movie’s announcement and the reveal of its rather long and unusual name, many other actors/actresses’ have been cast.
Harley Quinn will team up with the Birds of Prey in this movie in order to save a young girl (supposedly the character of Cassandra Cain) from the Black Mask.
Margot Robbie also released a teaser image on her Instagram account, you can check the image out below.
The character of Renee Montoya has appeared in live action on the ‘Gotham’ TV series, in a more minor role. The character will make her live-action movie debut in this movie, although a character inspired by Renee has previously appeared in the Dark Knight. Renee is a detective in the comics but is more well-known as the second version of ‘The Question’, whether she will appear as the ‘The Question’ in this movie is yet unknown.
Two other major cast members for this upcoming movie include Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane; Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights; True Blood) as Huntress and Black Canary respectively. All of these characters appear in some form in the short teaser above.
Black Canary, otherwise known as Dinah Lance, is a crime fighter and one of the best fighters in the DC comics universe. Trained by Wildcat and commonly teaming up with the Green Arrow and Batgirl, Black Canary is a major character within DC Comics. She has been a member of multiple teams, most recently, the Justice League of America and the aforementioned Birds of Prey.
Huntress, AKA Helena Bertinelli, is a vigilante operating in Gotham City. Huntress has most recently appeared alongside Dick Grayson (Robin, Nightwing), in the comic series ‘Grayson’, before appearing in Rebirth’s Batgirl and the Birds of Prey series.
Both characters have appeared in live action before, with Canary appearing in ‘Smallville’ and as a major character in ‘Arrow’, Huntress has also made several appearances in early seasons of ‘Arrow’. Both characters, alongside founding member Batgirl/Oracle, were also featured in the ‘Birds of Prey’ TV show which aired in 2002, only lasting one season.
The original incarnation of the comic book series focused on a partnership between the characters of Batgirl and Black Canary, with the Huntress joining later. There has been no official confirmation that the character of Batgirl will appear, though it would be an odd choice not to include the most important character in the Birds of Prey series.
Cathy Yan is directing the movie, which is set to be released on Feb. 7, 2020. However, ‘Shazam!’, starring Zachary Levi, will be the next big DC movie, releasing in April 2019.
