Hobbs and Shaw: Family Thoughts…

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are set to reprise their Fast and Furious roles as Hobbs and Shaw in a spin-off movie of the Franchise set to release on the 2nd August 2019. IMDB summarise the plot as: “Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity.” Check out the trailer here.

Other main characters include Idris Elba as the antagonist, Eiza Gonzalez and Vanessa Kirby. The film is directed by David Leitch (who also directed Deadpool 2), script-written by Chris Morgan (who has written for the franchise previously) and produced by Seven Bucks Productions’ Hiram Garcia.

This film looks like it will be an epic blockbuster with its trailer making it seem more like a Marvel addition rather than a Fast and Furious spin-off. With the franchise though, highlighting the importance of family, what does the rest of the Fast and Furious family think of this new spin-off movie?

The Family

Michelle Rodriguez: There’s not much out there on Michelle’s thoughts on the Hobbs and Shaw movie but with that being said, there is an all-female spin-off that was pitched to Universal. On the 23rd January 2019, Vin Diesel welcomed three female screenwriters to the “Fast Family” on an Instagram post. They include Perlman, Beer and Robertson-Dworet. This came after the eighth instalment when Rodriguez threatened to leave the franchise if it didn’t do its female characters more justice.

Vin Diesel: It’s not news that Diesel and Johnson have had an on-going feud for a while now, but nothing has revealed the actor’s opinion on the flick. In fact, it could be that Diesel secretly supports the expansion of the franchise with his reveal of an all-female cast spin-off in the works, even it is Johnson who is at the forefront of the first spin-off.

Tyrese Gibson: The actor made it clear over Instagram back in DATE that he was displeased with Johnson going solo. His post stated: “If you move forward with that #Hobbs movie, you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter… we don’t fly solo.”

Ludacris: The artist has been in the franchise since its second instalment. During Gibson’s uproar at the Hobbs solo movie, it was revealed that both Ludacris and he turned down the chance to feature in a spin-off movie that would feature only the two of them. Ludacris has remained quiet about his opinion on this upcoming film but his actions from all those years ago probably speak louder.

There is one really annoying point about the trailer, however. If this film is part of the Fast and Furious franchise, how is it that the trailer only shows one sports car in the trailer? If you take a look at spin-offs from other franchises, they all follow the key theme from the original films. The Marvel movies all have at least one super-hero in them and Fantastic Beasts has the magic and the world from the Harry Potter series. So, where are the cars in this Hobbs and Shaw movie?

For any Fast and Furious fan, the cars are an integral part of the franchise and one of the main reasons why it has done as well as it has. If viewers are looking for an action-packed film this summer, I’m sure this will probably be the best one to come out but I don’t think they should expect to find a Fast and Furious flick.
