“From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

James Gunn, who is set to direct the Suicide Squad sequel, has been hired back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Gunn was fired from the position after old tweets resurfaced from his Twitter account.

Deadline has stated that the decision to hire Gunn back was discussed and decided upon months ago by Disney and Marvel. James Gunn also tweeted about the situation, thanking everyone who supported him during the past year.

The cast and many fans backed the director, even campaigning to get him back in the role, with Dave Bautista being one of the most vocal about the situation. Echoing Bautista’s words in the latest episode of WWE Raw, Disney this week gave him exactly what he wanted, returning Gunn to his directorial position.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is not expected to see the light of day until around 2023, as Gunn will still be writing and directing the Suicide Squad Sequel, which is aiming for a 2021 release date. The decision to wait until after Suicide Squad 2 was agreed by Disney.
